Subject: Accelerating the Chooser Dialogue

The Scenario:
Our department consists of 60 - 70 members of staff all with Mac access
to 3 or 4 LaserWriters (it varies), two of which are spooled. Some of
us are using System 7 and others are using System 6 (usually 6.0.7).
Until everyone moves to S7, we have standardised on version 5.2 of the
LW software. For various reasons, we (as individuals) wish to be able
to change the LW we use several times a day.

The Question:
Is there a way to by-pass the long-winded apple menu/chooser dialogue
process on both S6 and S7?

For example, is there some software which would allow one to have icons
of (say) LW1, LW2, LW3 and LW4 on the desktop, which are brought into
use by a double-click? As far as S7 is concerned, I cannot imagine how
aliases are of more than minimal assistance in speeding up the process.
What about something which allows dragging & dropping?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

DayStar PowerCache accelerators and the Applied Engineering 4300.  I would

Subject: Apple Basic Color Monitor (S)

Recently, I asked the digest if the rumors I had heard concerning the Apple
Basic Color Monitor were true.  I had heard that it was pretty bad.  Well,
apparantly the rumors are true.  Everyone who responded thought the Basic
monitor paled in comparison to the 14" model.  More than one person thought
the
14" was well worth the $200 difference if price, especially considering the
fact that you must sit in front of the thing all the time.  Thanks to all who

Subject: At Ease Bypass Problem

We are using At Ease in a computer lab and users have found that
a command key bypass (Command-Shift-Option) + Reset or Shut-
Down from the Special Menu, followed immediately by Escape will
force At Ease to quit.

Our solution has been to use ResEdit to disable Reset and
Shut-Down in the Special menu to prevent this, but I can't
think this is a good solution.

Any ideas would be helpful.

In Digest #126, John Thoo suggests using Norton SpeedDisk
to control bad sectors by having it zero them out.
If this feature worked all the time it would be great.
However my experience with Syquest cartridges has been
that more often than not SpeedDisk will simply say
"Defective sector. Unable to continue" which is really
useful. It doesn't even tell what the sector number is
so you can go and deal with it using an app written by
someone with more intelligence than the the SpeedDisk authors.
So I would just caution people not to get too excited about
SpeedDisk in thie regard.

To begin with, the subject of your message is misleading; it suggests
that there's some horrible problem with the GCC laser printers, when
in fact there's no basis for such a suggestion.

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. :-) The PhoenixPage level 2 interpreter
that's used in the SelectPress 600 and BLP Eclipse series is just as stable
and usable as one would expect of a high-quality, high-performance PostScript
implementation, including Adobe's. Both Adobe and Phoenix have their little
quirks, but a PostScript program that runs on one will run on the other,
assuming it makes use of standard (not implementation-specific) level 2
features.

If the only complaint about the output is that it doesn't have the Adobe
logo on it, then that sort of proves the point...

Of course, I'm just a storage guy and don't know much about printers,
and I don't speak in any official capacity for the company.

Ok, speaking strictly as a consumer, I understand that you might be
hesitant to purchase a printer with a non-Adobe PostScript
interpreter.  However, there is no reason to scare people away from
"compatibles."  The prime _REASON_ that GCC is able to offer high
quality printers with these features, at these prices, is because they
don't have to pay Adobe the royalties.

I have worked in GCC's quality assurance department, and can tell you
that the printers (BLP Eclipse 4 and 8 specifically, but also the
SelectPress 600) are _excellent_ machines, and are benchmarked against
the LaserWriter IIg.  Which means that we do NOT ship a product until
it surpasses the competition.

One of the things I like best about my PB100 is being able to boot from
the RAM disk. I can put a small system and ClarisWorks or HyperCard on the
RAM disk and work for 4-5 hours on a single battery.

Now I'm wondering if this can be done with the newer PowerBooks and Duos.

Why not try the AfterDark Globe module? Scan in a pict, and paste it into
the module?

You can get a new CRT from Soft Solutions for about $125. You might also want
to get a copy of Larry Pina's "Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets", which has
complete instructions for this and other repairs, although Soft Solutions can

    I use (and really like) Resolve (was using version 1.0v2) - especially its
    scriptability. HOWEVER, since adding AutoDoubler version 2.0i, I get a
    bomb
    (bus error) whenever I try to save a file, or turn AutoSave on, or on
    occasions open a file. Although I have a pile of INITS/extensions
    shoehorned into my 8MB/40MB SE/30 (System 7.0.1 British), it's definitely
    AutoDoubler that's the problem: disable it at startup and Resolve is rock
    solid. However, as you can imagine, I bought AutoDoubler because with a
    40MB HD I'm desperate for space and turning it off and having to manually
    decompress everything with the DD Expand utility is a pain.
    The UK distributors Frontline knew nothing of this incompatibility but did
    (eventually) send an upgrade to version 1.1v1 which I'm told is current:
    problem persists! Actually, it's a bit more interesting than that in that
    for the first couple of times everything was fine, I *think* (not
    positive)
    that it was after AD first did an automatic scan/compression session that
    the problem returned.
    Any thoughts? (No reply as yet from Claris.tech@applelink)

I have Resolve at home and have no conflict with it.  You are running
AutoDoubler 2.0i but should be running 2.0.1i.  The 2.0.1 release
fixed some problems with some other Claris products.

Try the following:

1. The AutoDoubler cache.  Is it set too high, above 256K.
2. Exclude Resolve from compression.
3. Install the AutoDoubler 2.0.1 Patch.

Lately I have been having trouble maintaining the color settings in a number
of applications as well as in the General Controls. For example, if I set
the White Knight window color to green it has changed to deep brown the
next time the program is launched. The same occurs with the desktop color.
I have tried disabling extensions, zapping the PRAM, creating new Preferences
files etc.,, none of which seem to solve the problem. Any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I just received my upgrade to CopyDoubler. It is indeed unbundled from
    AutoDoubler, and if you call Fifth Generation you should be able to talk
    them

    CopyDoubler 2.0 is definately faster than the Finder. It also allows
    background
    copies ** BUT ** don't plan on doing a lot while it is copying. It
    definately
    chews up CPU resources! I did one network copy and was sure that my Mac
    had
    crashed. I was just getting ready to reboot when the window I had tried to
    move
    scooted over to the other side of my screen.

When copying to a remote volume you will find that the first 10% or
so of the copy will not time share very well.  This is because CopyDoubler
is checking the transfer rate.

    All this said, I really like it and highly recommend it. I spend a lot of
    time
    copying files and it has (so far) proven to be exreamly useful. Maybe,
    with
    enough requests, Fifth Generation will add a lower priority setting for
    background copies.

Ref the messege from Michael Coyne about disappearing icons, 20 Jun 93.

 I was having the same problem and believe I found a cure. I think the problem
is in the application substitution function of NOW Menus in NOW Utilities.
When
application substitution is on, it creates alternate opening links for
different applications such as Teach Text. When they are present, the Teach
Text icon changes to the generic pencil-in-hand.

I cured the problem by removing all the alter links from the substitution
window of NOW Menus and then rebuilt the desk top with the desktop reset
extension that comes with Disk Doubler. This brought back my Icons and the
problem has not re-occured. I further turned off the application substitution
capability, it wasn't worth the headache. Hope this works for you.

Dollars and $ense was owned by The Software Toolworks for a while, and
they didn't do anything with it.  Last fall, it was bought by Business
Sense, Inc. in Kemmerer, WY.  They apparently had big plans, too, but
their 800- number has since been disconnected, and there doesn't seem
to be any local listing for them.  I suspect that D&$ has finally
died.  :-(

I notice that MacWarehouse is still selling it in one of their
bundles.  Someone probably had a bunch of leftover copies.  Maybe they
can tell you who, if anyone, is currently supporting it.

I have been using it for about a year and a half and am a big fan. However,
you
are not going to be able to run it, let alone be happy with it, on a PB 100.
It's not so much the HD space (1 meg for the app, 1 meg for the FaxSpool
folder, anywhere between 32K and 120K per page of incoming fax), but the RAM
requirements. I tried to run it on my old Plus, and it wheezed. You need at
least 5 megs, preferably 8, to run Fax Manager Plus and a decent System.

Its OCR capabilities are very good. I have successfully decoded off-angle
submissions (10 errors in 3 pages) and other potential stumbling blocks. I
heartily recommend it, and am currently using it on a Quadra 800 with 16 megs
of ram and a 500 meg hard drive under System 7.1 with a SupraFax 14.4. No
problems. But don't expect it to live on a PB 100. Sorry...

Ric Ford of MacWEEK was, I believe, the first person to mention (in print)
the cause of the huge floppy desktop files (it was in his 04/19/93
MacInTouch column).

The solution that I came up with that I sent him a few weeks ago was rather
simple--just create an alias (of the floppy itself, for example), which
should take no more than 1K (if no custom icon is in there) and then make
it invisible with any of the file attribute-modifying utilities. Now, when
you rebuild the desktop, you will always have one file there, and it only
costs you that 1K extra of space.

You will have to remember to regenerate the invisible alias after you
reinitialize the disk (which is a good way to have Sys7 lock out any new
bad sectors), but it is much easier than constantly
creating/deleting/recreating a file or folder just for a rebuild.

Picking software and the company that sells it
is like picking a church and a religion. Everyone
says that they have the best this and the best that.
All I want is a software package that will do the
job that I want with the least amount of expense
and effort on my part.

I am not looking at finding the best that one company
has to offer because I like the company.  If I like
company I will buy stock in it.  I am looking to buy
the most personally effective package I can find.

If that application comes form Microsoft then I will
buy it.  If it comes from Adobe I will Buy it.  If a
friend of mine wrote it and wants $20 for it I will
buy it.

I will admit that some corporations have policies
that I don't agree with but then I don't have the job
that they do.  I don't have to please my share holders
and all of the people who buy my products at the same
time.

The same is true for all of us who use products from
a variety of different places.  Your job is not the
same as my job.  You do not have to answer to the
same people that I do.  You don't have the need for
the same applications that I do.  Even if you have
the same job description that I do all of these
differences still hold true.

Personally I don't think that anyone should be
held in any bad or good light for the companies they
buy from or the applications they buy.  I think they
should be judged by what they can do with the resources
that they have acquired.

If you want my opinion of Microsoft or any other Company
that I get my software from my e-mail address is
[e-mail].

As a suggestion to the Info-Mac users why don't we create
a list of people on the digest that can answer questions
on specific applications that they use.  Something like what
MacScitech does with their experts panel.  There could be
a new directory in the archives called Experts or Opinions.
inside is are Post-Script and non-Postscript versions of
a list arranged by software that listed the names and E-Mail
of People willing to answer questions on a more technical
nature than what appear on the list.

but not for Text files. I used Apple Exchange to transfer my Mac files to PC
even if I selected different options.

     I tried to use the following comands:

     FFFFF - everything appears on one line!!!

     line too long


     I asked someboday here. It seems always a problem between Mac and PC. If

I had similar problems with my LCIII. This probably isn't your problem,
but it can't hurt for me to tell you what I found:

my problem occured when I was pressing return several times to wake up a
terminal server. In my case, the volume was actually getting bumped up to
maximum for no reason, as opposed to getting muffled. The problem was with
Easy Access and/or StickyKeys. one of these things is activated by hitting
the return key 5 times quickly.

There was a conflict between Easy Access and Sound Manager, that caused the
volume to max out. I ended up killing both of them, due to lack of need.

The same problem the Mac IIsi has had for a while is now occuring with the
Mac LC too. We have a Mac IIsi and a Mac LC in the office. Both have the
intermittent sound problem. It is a hardware problem that will eventually
occur with every click and snap together Macintosh model. The speaker is
connected to the mother board with spring loaded contacts. The contacts
corrode in time and cleaning them does help for a few weeks or months, but
then the problem re-occurs. The best solution would be to solder on a plug
and make a proper connection. I guess this is the price you pay for 'cheap'
Macs.

To work around the problem, there is an F-key (in the SUMEX archives) to
toggle the speaker. This helps zapping through the resistance formed by the
crud on the contacts. My colleague has another solution to the problem: he
slaps the casing and the sound comes back (watch out not to ruin the hard
disk).

I can live with the situation, but I think it is bad advertising for Apple.

The only access I have to the Internet is through Mail (MS Mail bridged to a
HPUX mail system and then through a periodic dialup to the Internet). I can
send and receive mail but have no FTP capability. I finally figured out how to
use FTPMAIL to transfer files and have had mixed success (I know that Meatloaf
said "two out of three ain't bad" but I'd like to improve on this if possible
:-) ).

Specifically, I tried to get mac-digest-stack-11.hqx using the following
commands.

   connect sumex-aim.stanford.edu
   binary
   chunksize 100000
   uuencode
   get /info-mac/card/mac-digest-stack-11.hqx
   quit

I received three messages. I combined the three using MS Word, then ran UUlite
to decode the file. Then I ran into problems. I used Stuffit lite to BinHex4
the file but was told that it was not a BinHex4 file. It also wasn't any known
archive format. On the off chance, I changed the file type to Hypercard and
(surprise, surprise) it isn't a Hypercard stack. Now I'm at a loss!

Note that I used the same procedure on two other files and they worked fine
(using the above procedure).

Is mac-digest-stack-11.hqx in a funny format or something? Any help would be
appreciated.

Subject: MacX (Q) & Printer (Q) & New model (C)

    MacX--I notice that MacX v1.2 states that it is a X11R4
server. Is there a X11R5 server for the mac???
    Secondly about MacX, has anyone else had problems over
long distances? Seems like the xterm comes from the UNIX boxes
in this building fine, but if I want one from 2 or 3 buildings
away...It never comes. And forget about from another city...
Anyone had this problem??? I know the connection works, because
I can telnet from the buildings UNIX server to the unix box that
is 2 buildings away and have it send its display back to the mac.
But I cannot get MacX to go out and run the command and have the
window appear on the mac. The mac is in the hosts file too...

    ONe commment about MacX, one thing I noticed on from our
IBM RS/6000 was that if the users login writes to the xterm before
the window appears on the mac. The connection is broke and the
window will never appear on the mac. (users login files like .profile,
or .cshrc, or .login, etc...) I put a sleep in the users .cshrc
and all works fine. (Note also that I was not able to change the
stty settings either before the window appeared on the Mac.)

    Printers--With todays fast printers it seems ashame to
connect them to localtalk (via phone net, or local talk connectors).
What is the fastest connection for a mac printer? (I think it would
be the LW pro 630's ethernet to a mac that has an ethernet connection.
is this right??  Are there other solutions???)

    New Models--I am still waiting for a multi-processor Mac
(or power PC) :-)
    As for the floppy, I would be appauled at losing the auto-
eject mechanism, unless it is only at the bottom of the line and
was done for the price wars. If it brings a machine that has quality
parts at a price beneath 750 new, than I would not be bothered by it.

    As for the restructuring--I am somewhat glad to see Sculley go.
the Mac line needs to be trimmed some. I cannot immagine how much it
is costing Apple to keep on inventory so many different machines. The
line needs a budget machine that is as cheap as quality parts can make
and is not very flexible. (of course one buget model in color and one
in black&white.) Then 2 modular cases which utilize the same
parts, but one case can come with more internal exspansion than the
the other. But the smaller case should not be crippled, it should still
be able to be expanded to the same level as the bigger more exspensive
model, but would have to be expanded externally. This just for the "low"
end models. The higher end machines would be in the same cases as the
two upper low end machines and have the same expansion ablities. Then
there would be the flagship, big bad bleeding edge machine.
    Just 7 models, of course 4 of the seven are so modular that
they can be custom talyored to the individual and only as limited as
the individuals bank account (not by their physical construction). Sort
of like cars, the come with different engines, different interior,
different accessories. Why do we have to buy our computers with the
apple's idea of what we want?
    Anyone at Apple want to talk to me about this idea? Just e-mail
me...

    I hope to see a leaner mean Apple with a blazing "bleeding edge"
flagship again. thanks for listening.

Can't resist throwing in my 2 cents to this thread. I agree with
Shekhar Govind that Nisus has Word beat, and the gap will grow
again fairly soon when Nisus Writer appears. Nevertheless, mention of
Word reminded me of the first introduction of the Mac (or maybe it
was the Fat Mac). I seem to recall Jobs lining up various worthies

back then. They all dutifully announced that they would develop for
the Macintosh, but Microsoft was the only company that came thro'

Moreover, Microsoft developed a product that was competing with a *free*
rival, something that everyone had. At the time, a lot of people

Subject: PaintWriter on Quadra

In Info-Mac v11 #127, Ephraim Fithian <[e-mail]>
writes about crashes caused by the HP PaintWriter driver v. 3.07 on a
Quadra when the cache is enabled. We've had the same problem on our
Quadra 900 since we got it, and went through a long process of tracking
it down.

The neat thing about this problem is that the driver will crash programs
as they start up, just by virtue of having the driver selected in the
Chooser; this prevents you from using the compatability init to disable
the cache for just the applications that need to print to the PaintWriter.
Haven't heard anything from HP about an improved version, but here's what
we do to work around the problem.

1. Use an undocumented feature of the "Cache Switch" control panel to
   turn off the caches without restarting - just hold down the option
   key when changing cache settings and you don't have to reboot. I
   think Apple warns that this may cause some problems with AppleTalk
   in odd situations, but in practice we haven't had any problems.

2. Select the buggy HP driver in the Chooser, then do all the work
   which requires use of the printer.

3. When you're done with the printer, select some other printer in the
   chooser (e.g. a LaserWriter). Now it's safe to turn the caches back
   on again - just use the option-key trick again to avoid rebooting.

This is really pretty usable, especially when you realize you can fire
up your favorite paint program, for example, work for a couple of hours
with the cache _on_ (nice and speedy) then disable the cache just long
enough to change printer drivers and print - you don't have to reboot
or even quit the program in question. Hope this helps you out!

ProSwitch 1.2 allows you to set any key combination that you want to controll
app switching. It allows switching both forwards and backwards in the Queue,
so you can even have Cmd-Tab go to the next one, and Cmd-Shift-Tab go back.

That is how I use it, due to force of habit. Unfortunately, my job is
developing under Windoze.

ProSwitch also allows keystrokes for Hide & Show others, and application icon
click-switching, A-la Multifinder.

let me know if you can't find this - according to the doc, I am free to
distribute it, so I can submit it to info-mac.

Dear colleagues:
The users of our macs are required to keep their data on personal floppies and
to make backups on floppies. That is a major hassle, even if the harddisk is
used as intermediate medium. Really nice would be the following: A program
that asks for two floppies (or a folder on harddisk and a floppy), compares
directories, and copies only changes files to sync the two. For floppy
synching,
the harddisk should be used for intermediate storage.
   Does such a beast exist? I tried several powerbook synching utilities, but
they were not effective for this task. With apple script came a demo script,
which nearly does it, but not  for floppies. One of these days I'll have a go
at
it myself, but I sure do not find Apple script an easy language to learn.

Subject: TIFF and PICT:  Could this be magic...

I have a question regarding file sizes, specifically dealing with a scanned
B&W photograph.  If the scanned image is saved as PICT the file is 1,500k;
if saved as TIFF, 1,000k.  If the PICT is placed into a Freehand file the
resulting file is around 2,000 while the same image in TIFF format placed
into a Freehand file yields a 100k file.  Where is the other 1,900?  Is
this true of all programs?

Dear colleagues:
printing on transparencies is for all ink printers a problem, if normal
transparencies are used. Special ink-jet transparencies are available, that
have a special coating on one side, the one that feels rough. With these,
the Stylewriter, or the DeskWriter, can produce brilliant transparencies.
    Just as an aside: The new DeskWriter divers 4.0 support also the
DeskWriter C! It is not available in the "select printer type" pop-up menu,
but when printing it notices that a "C" is connected and changes some of the
dialog contents (e.g. "grays" lets you select color matching etc.). This is
nice
now we need only one driver for our various DeskWriter types. But why did
HP take out the progess indicator in the print monitor?
    Furthermore, GRENDEL asked about the growing size of the (hidden) desktop
file on floppies. I've noticed it too, it is the collection of bundle & icon
info of all files types that ever were on this floppy. Simple remedy, does not
allways help: Hold down option&command when inserting the floppy and let the
desktop be rebuilt. Sure remedy, a hassle: Re-Initialize the floppy.
    Finally, Ed Larry asked about hot key for switching between applications
a al Alt-Tab in windows. Well, of course there is the application menu top
right.
Then there is a beatiful freeware "Applicon" which puts floating application
icon
a any place on the desktop, which can float above all others, showing all open
apps and by clicking select it. Third, there are a couple of shareware and
free-
ware solution, I like best "ApplWindows", that switches with
<modifier>-<arrow>
not only between application, but also between windows of each app and, to
boot,
adds hierachical window submenus to the application menu top right.

I apologize for not paying attention to all the bandwidth on ARA.  I
received version 1.0 of ARA bundled with my PB 100.  Yesterday I installed
it on my SE at home, and when I tried to open the application I got a
message that it was improperly installed and should be reinstalled.  Well,
I just used the installer that came with it...  So I reinstalled it and
once again got the same message.  Next, I installed it on my PB 100
thinking maybe it was something about the SE.  Well, I got exactly the same
message on my PB 100.  Any comments, suggestions, other help, would be much

on a Stylewriter II with Kaleidagraph using the "print graph" menu option.
Some text labels (axis labels of graph titles) were truncated at their
right margins. These labels were in either Helvetica or Times, 14pt or
18pt, and they were centre justified.
    The problem disappeared if the same graphs were printed on a
Laserwriter IINT which leads me to suspect a bug in the Stylewriter driver.
I also found that the titles and labels printed correctly when five graphs
were arranged on a page using the "show page" menu option.  Has anyone else
had this kind of problem?
    I'm using a Centris 650, 8Mo RAM, virtual memory OFF, system F-7.1
and the Stylewriter driver is F1-1.0.

In reply to the question: how does the mac know what the connected
monitors are "stupid" VGA monitors rather than "smart" Mac monitors.

The answer is: all monitors are stupid (even Apple ones) but the cable
is smart!

On the Macs that can run into multiple different monitor types (LC,
Centris, Powerbook and Quadra models) the video port has a series of
sense lines that when connected together in the appropriate manner tell
the Mac video circuitry what monitor type is attached. If you want then
you can make this switchable so that at boot time you can select VGA or
Super VGA if you are running with a MultiSync monitor. Two different
screen resolutions at the flick of a switch (you have to boot to change
modes).

All this is documented in the Mac hardware notes on a CDROM near you
(ETO or perhaps even the Developers CD).

Question: I note the LC III spec doesn't mention Super VGA but it will
work on VGA and 16" monitor. This I find a little strange as the scan
parameters for the latter are similar to SVGA (but as I don't have an
SVGA spec I don't know exactly). Can you persuade a LC III to run in
800 x 600 mode on a Super VGA monitor, by telling the Mac its a 16" monitor?

This and the high speed access to video memory in the Centris/Quadra
series is very cool, IMHO!

    Q: Are you running AutoDoubler?

    AutoDoubler does some work with the icons that can cause
    the BNDL information to get confused.  They also provide
    an extension called Desktop Reset to try to unscramble
    the mess.  One way to avoid this (with AutoDoubler) may
    be to tell AutoDoubler NOT to put the little DD symbol
    in the file's icon.

AutoDoubler does nothing to BNDL information.  Having AutoDoubler
not display the DD on compressed files will have no effect.

If you have AutoDoubler installed and you rebuild your desktop then
you must have AutoDoubler running during the rebuild for the Finder
to get the BNDL info from the compressed applications.  If you rebuild
without AutoDoubler running then you will see generic icons.

DeskTopReset is provided because of the desktop file corruption that
can occur just from running the system.  Using DeskTopReset to delete
your desktop periodically will ensure that the Finder is maintaining
a clean desktop file.

    BTW, this is not knocking AutoDoubler.  It is a really nice
    utility that saved me themoney of buying a new hard disk.
    However, it is peculiar behavior.

    If you aren't running AutoDoubler, then I don't know
    what the cause of your icon problem is.

Could be a damaged desktop file.  Use DeskTopReset to delete it and
build a clean one.
